ISMN Newsletter 3: March 2011

This is the third newsletter of the International Soil Moisture Network. Through periodic newsletters we would like to inform you about recent updates of existing data sets, new networks and related news items such as cooperations and publications. For the latest news we also refer to the news section on our website

General News

Publication in HESSD

A publication on the technical implementation of the ISMN and the networks currently contained in the database is now available on Hydrology and Earth System Sciences Discussion: http://www.hydrol-earth-syst-sci-discuss.net/8/1609/2011/hessd-8-1609-2011.html

Please, from now on cite this paper (in addition to the official references of the data providing networks) if you use any of the ISMN data in your publications.

New Networks

CALABRIA

The meteorological network of the Centro Funzionale Multirischi is located in the south of Italy. Soil moisture, air temperature and precipitation are provided, although precipitation is only available at three of the five stations. Soil moisture measurements are taken at three different depths. Currently, data for the period 2001-01-01 to 2010-05-31 is contained in our database.
More information about this network is found at [https://ismn.geo.tuwien.ac.at/en/sites/networks/CALABRIA/].

MOL-RAO

The operational network "MOL-RAO" is run by the German Meteorological Service and located near the city of Berlin, Germany. The two stations of this network contained in the ISMN provide information about volumetric soil moisture, soil temperature, air temperature and precipitation for the period from 2003 to 2008. Soil moisture measurements are taken with a TDR sensor at six different layers, up to a depth of 90 cm.
More information about this network is found at [https://ismn.geo.tuwien.ac.at/en/sites/networks/MOL-RAO/].

SWEX_POLAND

The network operated by the Institute of Agriculture PAS is located in the polish wetlands southeast of the city Warsaw and consists of two stations. Soil moisture and soil temperature measurements are taken with a TDR based sensor at eight different depths. The ISMN contains data from 2006-08-03 to 2010-01-03.
More information about this network is found at [https://ismn.geo.tuwien.ac.at/en/sites/networks/SWEX_POLAND/ ].

UDC_SMOS

Soil moisture datasets of 11 stations near the city Munich in Germany are provided by the Department of Geography of the Ludwig Maxilmilian University of Munich. The stations of this network are all situated on grassland. The measurements are taken at five different layers up to a depth of 40 cm. At some stations soil moisture of a specific layer is measured by multiple sensors. Data from 2007-11-08 until 2010-12-31 are available on the ISMN.
More information about this network is found at [https://ismn.geo.tuwien.ac.at/en/sites/networks/UDC_SMOS/ ].

UMSUOL

The Italian network "UMSUOL" consists of one station and is located in the north of Italy, close to the city of Bologna. Soil moisture measurements at seven different depths are provided by the Agenzia Regionale Prevenione Ambiente (ARPA). Data spanning the period from 2009-06 to 2010-09 were inserted into the ISMN.
More information about this network is found at [https://ismn.geo.tuwien.ac.at/en/sites/networks/UMSOL/ ].

Updates on Networks

REMEDHUS

The data sets for 19 stations of the Spanish network "REMEDHUS" were updated. Soil moisture and soil temperature time series are now available until 2010-12-31.
The
"Carretoro" (abbreviation "K10") station was found to be located at a wrong location and was moved to the right coordinates.

SMOSMANIA

Nine new stations were added to the French network "SMOSMANIA". Similar to the previous stations soil moisture data are provided at 4 different layers. For the new stations measurements from 2009-01-01 to 2010-01-01 are available through the ISMN.

UDC_SMOS

The data sets for eight stations of the German network "UDC_SMOS" were updated. The soil moisture time series are now available until 2010-12-31.
